Are any of you watching Louie? I've got to say, I totally identified with him in the Double Date/Mom episode, unfortunately.

gross [Apr. 13th, 2010|05:37 pm]
One of Jesse's friends who is over just peed and didn't wash his hands. I only know this because I'm in the next room over and definitely did not hear any sink water running. Now I'm wondering what all he's touched in my house with his penis hands. I'm fighting hard to keep the OCD in check, but I might be losing. Oh, no! Now Jesse went in that same bathroom, so he's going to emerge with contaminated hands too! Help!

The house is coming along. So far we've cleaned up the yard, torn out all the carpet and removed the carpet staples, sanded out a cat pee stain on the floor, pulled down some wallpaper, and tossed out a bunch of stuff the previous owner left. Jesse's planning on refinishing the floors himself before we move in, and we started getting estimates on gutting and remodeling the full bath today. We also need to get the windows replaced, and may end up having a professional install the flooring in the basement, which is turning out to be a pain. The berber carpet that was down there came up pretty easily, but there is a black rubbery pad that has been glued to the original linoleum tiles that doesn't want to budge. It was worn unevenly, so I thought we should try to scrape it up before installing something else, but now I'm not sure that was the right decision because it's really time consuming and it is impossible to get it all off of the tiles. But my OCD side can hardly stand laying flooring over the linoleum, let alone over some chewed-up old rubber pad, so I guess I'll keep working at it.

I'm starting to get worried we won't get everything done by the end of May when we have to move, but since Jesse can pretty much work there as much as he wants, that should help.

Capital I (and lowercase n) anyone? [Mar. 3rd, 2009|06:34 pm]
I stayed up late last night watching classic Sesame Street videos on You Tube. Who could forget "Milk!," "Me and My Llama," "Sugar Beet," etc? But my favorite has to be:

They don't make them like that anymore.

AAACK! [Feb. 6th, 2009|08:27 pm]
This better not be enacted the day after we close on our house! I will freak out and hold a grudge against the federal government forever!

Seriously? Another $800bn? Where is this money coming from? Didn't Congress have to approve the original $700bn? Why is the Fed allowed to just do this unilaterally now? I heard they might just have to print more money to pay for it. Excellent.

I've got to watch the NewsHour and get some more info. about this.

gas prices [Oct. 5th, 2008|12:44 pm]
Have you Akronites seen the prices at the pump this weekend? Many stations are selling regular for well under $3.00/gal.!

A few months ago I predicted that gas prices would miraculously fall before the election and help Republicans win their national races because people would feel better about the economy, but now I don't know what to make about this price drop. Even if gas prices stay relatively low, I doubt it will make people start feeling positive about the overall economy, but I could be overestimating people's depth of understanding about the situation we're in.

I keep hearing on the news that due to the credit crunch, businesses may not be able to borrow the money they need to meet their payrolls and purchase inventory. Is this how people routinely do business these days? I admit I'm completely ignorant when it comes to business, but that sounds like an extremely bad idea to me--especially if it's something you have to do frequently. And as an employee I'd like to know if my employer is having to borrow money in order to give me a paycheck regardless of how likely it is s/he will be able to repay the loan quickly.

This October surprise is not going to surprise me. Who wants to bet we'll miraculously capture Osama Bin Laden before the election?

Out of curiosity, I just sat down and calculated how much some of my common expenses have increased so far in 2008 compared to 2007. Here are the results:

Gasoline: 18%
Rent: 4%
Groceries: 4%
Electricity: 4%
Natural Gas: 27%!

There were a couple surprises in there for me. I really thought the groceries had gone up more than 4%, but that number might be a bit skewed because I have already started shopping at Marc's again as much as possible to save money, and have been cutting back on buying snacks and other unnecessary items. But the natural gas! That one is really bothering me because I don't feel like there's much I can do to reduce it because the increase is purely due to the increase in gas prices and not any increase in our usage--in fact we didn't use as much as expected this past year, so we didn't have to pay a full bill last month since we're on a budget plan. I guess I'll try turning the temperature down on the hot water heater a bit and avoid using the gas fireplace this winter as much as I have in the past.

Meanwhile, I only got a 2.5% pay raise in 2008, which is better than a lot of people got, but it's definitely not keeping up with this kind of inflation.
